President Bola Tinubu will not attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York this year. Instead, he has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation.

Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, announced this in a statement. According to the statement, President Tinubu, who recently returned from trips to China and the United Kingdom, focuses on addressing domestic challenges, particularly in the aftermath of severe flooding in parts of the country.

Vice President Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the high-level General Debate from September 24 to 28, 2024. He will also participate in key sideline events and hold bilateral meetings. The debate’s theme is *”Leaving No One Behind: Acting Together for the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations.”*
