The Senate on Thursday passed a vote of confidence in Senate President Godswill Akpabio, despite growing calls for him to step aside over allegations of sexual harassment made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The resolution followed a motion by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, which was overwhelmingly approved by the lawmakers.

Bamidele, in his submission, stated that the Senate would not be distracted by the controversy surrounding Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension and would instead focus on its legislative responsibilities. He added that the judiciary should handle all pending legal matters related to the case.

The Senate had suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan on March 6 over alleged misconduct and violations of its Standing Rules. However, she rejected the suspension, claiming it was an attempt to deny her justice regarding her allegations against Akpabio.
