Borno State Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Inuwa Kubo has announced that schools in the state will re-open for academic activities next week. That will be over two years after Borno public schools were closed due to Boko Haram insurgency.
Kubo who disclosed how renovation had been carried out in all public schools in the state said: “I want to state that government has repaired all structures damaged by the IDPs in the schools, to ensure comfort for the returning students.
“Parents and guardians should please make sure that they send their children back to school.”
The commissioner also criticized private schools in the state for taking advantage of the long closure of public schools to jack up school fees.
“We understand that some of them have taken undue advantage of the closure to hike school fees; we will not allow the situation to continue,” he said. Kubo further stated: “We are going to visit the schools to find out how much they are charging and how much they are paying their teachers.”
Borno primary schools were re-opened last year but the secondary level could not resume because their facilities had been converted to accommodation for scores of thousands of internally displaced persons who fled or were rescued from the onslaught of Boko Haram terrorists.
