Margaret Egbe is a unique Nigerian woman who has dedicated her professional life and time to providing succor for abused women and children. She, together with other like – minded women, founded the Shelter for Abused Women and Children (SAWAC) in 2007. She functions as Executive Director of this effective, highly impactful NGO.

About the work of her organisation, she says:

“I believe that the pursuit of human development is the greatest course and purpose of life and that in order to bring about effective changes within our communities, we need to be involved and work towards empowering our abused women and children.

Our goal is to bring a transformation of how they view their lives, overcome their obstacles and challenges, reset their vision and focus in pursuing their purpose and destiny of life. We acknowledge that it is an awesome privilege to be invited into their lives to work with them towards achieving these goals.”

Margaret Egbe, a lawyer, is a Nigerian from Delta State. She is a third generation lawyer who was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1984. Her late grandfather, Chief Asifo Egbe was a lawyer and her father, now late Webber George Egbe (SAN), may have been responsible for steering the course of her life towards the legal profession.

She holds a Masters Degree in law which she obtained in October 1983 from the University of Warwick, Coventry, United Kingdom. Her LLB, she obtained from the University of Buckingham, England and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1984.

She kicked off her legal practice with the law firm of late Chief Debo Akande of blessed memory and in 1988 joined the firm of her late uncle, the father’s younger brother, Mr. Fred Egbe, now of blessed memory. In October 2002, she left practice and joined the corporate world and was Company Secretary/Deputy Director of an insurance company. In March 2006, she resigned from her job and her life took a different direction. She undertook a course in Counselling and obtained a diploma in Counselling from Oxford College, England.

It is in recognition of her contribution to national development in the sphere of Philanthropy & Charitable Work in Nigeria that Ms. Margaret Egbe is deemed worthy to be conferred with the Development in Nigeria Merit Award.
