World-celebrated literary icon and social critic, Prof. Wole Soyinka has reportedly made good his vow to throw away his American green card if Donald Trump won the US Presidential election. The Nobel Prize winner was concerned about the campaign rhetoric of Trump, particularly his threat to go tough on immigration.
According to the AFP, Soyinka, at the sidelines of a conference at the University of Johannesburg, revealed that he has kept his promise to dump his green card if Trump won. He said: “I have already done it. I have disengaged (from the United States). I have done what I said I would do.
“I had a horror of what is to come with Trump… I threw away the card and I have relocated, and I’m back to where I have always been (which is his country, Nigeria).”
Soyinka however said he would not discourage other people from acquiring the US green card as he sees it as useful in many ways. His words: “It’s useful in many ways. I wouldn’t for one single moment discourage any Nigerian or anybody from acquiring a green card… but I have had enough of it.”
Prof. Wole Soyinka has these past decades been engaged in academic activities in the United States. He has taught in first-rate universities such as Harvard, Cornell and Yale. In that country, he has done a lot of research and delivered very important lectures.
