Following the resurgence of Boko Haram’s deadly attacks and last week’s ambush of an oil exploration team in Borno State, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has ordered a scaling up of all anti-terrorist operations in north eastern Nigeria.

He gave the fresh directive in a statement issued by his media aide, Laolu Akande shortly after an emergency meeting with the country’s military chiefs.

He also ordered the service chiefs to relocate to Borno on or before Sunday with men of  the Air Force Special Forces to join hands with the soldiers on ground to curtail the activities of the terrorist group.

The Director of Public Relations and Information of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Air Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya while speaking on the actions so far taken after the Acting Presidents’ directive said the NAF had deployed personnel as well as sophisticated equipment to checkmate the activities of the terrorist group.

“The measures include the deployment of additional NAF Special Forces and personnel of the Regiment Specialty to reinforce Base security and also fight alongside the Nigerian Army troops and NAF Special Forces that were already on ground,” Commodore Adesanya said.

He added: “In addition, the NAF has deployed thermal imaging cameras using infrared technology which can read temperature differences up to an appreciable distance away and run identity of a person at an acceptable distance. The cameras, which are mounted on NAF aircraft, can also penetrate obscurants such as smoke, fog and haze”.

Commodore Adesanya further said that its counter insurgency operations of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) would henceforth be stepped up in north-eastern Nigeria to further decimate the ability of Boko Haram terrorists.
