The Federal Government is planning to reintroduce tolling on federal highways to raise funds needed in the rehabilitation and maintenance of the roads.
Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola made the disclosure on Friday when he hosted members of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) who paid him a courtesy visit at his office in Abuja.
According to a statement released by the Director of Information in the ministry, Mohammed Ahmed, Fashola said the planned tolling system would only be introduced to road projects that had already been completed by the government.
He further disclosed that the Federal Government would spend N100 billion which is to be raised from the issuance of the Sukuk bond for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of 25 more arterial roads.
In July this year, the Senate proposed the reintroduction of the toll gates on federal roads by suggesting the setting aside of 0.5% of transport fares paid by passengers on inter-state trips to generate funds for the rehabilitation and maintenance of roads across the country.
