The United Kingdom has asked the Nigerian government to clarify the whereabouts and status of Nnamdi Kanu, the missing leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The 50-year-old Kanu who also holds a British citizenship was declared missing in mid September after clashes between soldiers and IPOB members at his family home in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

The Press Officer at the UK Commission in Abuja, Joe Abuku while confirming having asked about the whereabouts of Kanu from the Nigerian government said Kanu cannot be stripped of his British citizenship since he has not committed a terrorist offence.

“We are seeking urgent clarification from the Nigerian authorities about the status and whereabouts of Mr. Kanu, a British-Nigerian man, who has been reported missing since September 14,” Abuku said.

“One of the conditions that can make the United Kingdom strip its citizen of his nationality is if he engages in a terrorist activity at home or abroad. And Kanu has dual citizenship and therefore a citizen of Nigeria and UK,” he added.

Abuku further affirmed that the UK does not see IPOB as a proscribed entity despite the Nigerian government having secured a court order to that effect.
