Former Nigerian President and Chairman of the Panel of Advisors of the African Initiative for Governance (AIG), Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has said it is not yet time for him to determine if he would support President Muhammadu Buhari’s bid for a second term in office.

He stated this while fielding questions from journalists shortly after delivering a speech titled ‘Leadership in the African Context – How To Drive Transformation Change in African Countries’ at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford on Monday.

Obasanjo’s speech at the event which was organized by AIG to announce the 2017/2018 scholarship recipients drew a lot of questions bordering on why the African continent is governed by bad, corrupt and inexperienced leaders.

He blamed late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua for allowing the then governor of Delta State, James Ibori to push for the replacement of the erstwhile chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Nuhu Ribadu, resulting in the dismantling of some of the structures he had put in place to check and curtail corrupt practices.

He further expressed satisfaction over what AIG was doing by collaborating with the Blavatnik School of Government towards ensuring that young minds are produced in West Africa to take up the mantle of leadership in the nearest future.

The inaugural recipients of the AIG scholarship for 2017/2018 were Emokiniovo Akpughe (Nigeria), Efosa Trevor Edobor (Nigeria), Abdul-Fatawu Z. Hakeem (Ghana), Chukwunonso Iheoma (Nigeria), Oluwapelumi Simpson (Nigeria) and Emmanuel Taiwo, also from Nigeria.
