The acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu has maintained that corrupt politicians defecting from one political party to another would not be shielded from prosecution by the anti-graft agency.

Magu, who made the declaration on Wednesday during a parley with editors in Lagos said it was only the law courts that had the powers to exonerate or convict any politician indicted for corruption.

“The fact that a politician jumps from one party to another will not stop EFCC investigation. We don’t stop investigation until it is concluded. It is only the courts that have the powers to decide on whether to exonerate or convict any indicted politician,” Magu said.

While noting that some politicians would start reading political meanings into the work being done by the Commission as the electioneering period approaches, Magu explained that the EFCC remains apolitical and would  knock on the door of anyone who violates the law.

He therefore called on  media practitioners whom he described as critical shareholders in the anti-corruption campaign to deny those politicians their platform to shed crocodile tears.

“The media should not lend their platforms to helping the cause of the corrupt that are shedding crocodile tears,” he added.

There have been several insinuations and allegations that some prominent politicians who recently defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) did so to escape being prosecuted by the commission.
