Monday’s meeting between Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari and the 36 governors in the country to discuss a way forward towards arriving at an acceptable new national minimum wage has ended in a deadlock.
The governors had last week insisted that the only way they would be able to pay the ₦30,000 minimum wage recommended by the Mrs. Ama Pepple-led tripartite committee was to cut down the work force.
But the organized labour in the country responded to the governors’ position by issuing a December deadline to the Federal Government to forward the minimum wage bill to the National Assembly for approval or face the consequences.
Sources at the meeting which was held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja said it was inconclusive.
Also, governors refused to address State House correspondent at the end of the meeting as they headed straight to their waiting vehicles and drove off.
