At least 14 people, including several children, were killed by a lightning strike at a refugee camp in northern Uganda, local police confirmed on Sunday. The tragic incident occurred Saturday night at the Palabek settlement camp, where residents—primarily South Sudanese refugees—were attending a prayer service in a makeshift metallic structure.
The Palabek camp, situated on Uganda’s border with South Sudan, is home to approximately 80,000 displaced people. Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke reported that 34 others were injured in the lightning strike and have been taken to nearby health centers for treatment. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
Uganda frequently reports fatal lightning strikes, especially during its rainy seasons, raising concerns over safety measures in vulnerable areas like refugee camps.
