Delta State witnessed a significant political shake-up as Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his deputy, Monday Onyeme, formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The move, confirmed earlier this week, marks a notable realignment in the state’s political landscape.
Joining them in the defection is former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who was the vice-presidential candidate of the PDP in the 2023 general elections. The defection also includes several commissioners and key political stakeholders from the PDP in Delta State, signaling a sweeping shift in the state’s political allegiance.
The APC officially welcomed the defectors on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, through a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka. The party described the development as a landmark moment and expressed enthusiasm about the influx of new members.
“The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress, under the leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, CON, is highly elated by the decision of the Governor of Delta State, His Excellency Sheriff Oborevwori, to join our great party,” Morka stated.
He further assured the new members of full cooperation and inclusion within the APC, emphasizing the party’s commitment to unity and progress. “Our great party welcomes this important development and assures the governor, as well as incoming leaders and members of Delta PDP, of our fullest cooperation and accommodation within the APC family,” the statement continued.
Highlighting the broader implications of the defection, the APC noted that Delta State is now better positioned to play a more significant role in national development under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“We are delighted that Delta State now stands poised to contribute maximally to the success and realisation of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the enduring good and prosperity of Deltans and all Nigerians,” Morka added.
The mass defection is expected to reshape the political dynamics in Delta State ahead of the 2027 general elections, and may also impact the PDP’s strategic positioning in the South-South region.
