The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has died at the age of 91. The Ogun State Government confirmed his passing on Sunday.

Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs and a respected figure both within and outside the traditional institution. His death marks the end of an era in Ijebuland, where he served for more than six decades.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, in a statement mourning the monarch, described his death as a great loss to the people of the state and the country at large. He praised the late royal father for his exceptional leadership, deep wisdom, and commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of the Ijebu people.

Oba Adetona was widely known for his efforts to modernise traditional rulership and promote development within his domain. Under his reign, the annual Ojude Oba festival became a globally recognised cultural event, attracting local and international attention.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also expressed his grief over the monarch’s death, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most outstanding and revered traditional rulers. “He was a towering natural ruler who served his people with dignity, panache, class, and an unmistakable sense of duty,” the President said.

The death of Oba Adetona comes on the same day as the reported passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, making it a day of double national mourning.

Further details regarding the burial rites and succession are expected to be announced by the royal family in due course. Oba Adetona is remembered for his integrity, strong voice in national affairs, and his role in shaping modern traditional leadership in Nigeria.
