Prominent opposition politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, convened Tuesday at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja for a high-level media conference signaling the rise of a new political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The gathering marked the formal emergence of a cross-party alliance, comprising figures from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and other political blocs, under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The coalition has adopted the ADC as its political vehicle to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the next polls.
Other notable figures present at the event included former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, Senator Dino Melaye, and former Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung. Publisher and PDP stalwart Dele Momodu, Labour Party Senators Gabriel Suswam and Ireti Kingibe, and former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Emeka Ihedioha were also in attendance.
Also spotted at the venue was former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (retd.).
A key highlight of the event was the announcement of new interim leadership for the ADC. Former Senate President David Mark, who recently resigned from the PDP, was unveiled as the interim national chairman of the coalition-backed ADC. Former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola was named interim national secretary.
The coalition’s formation is widely seen as a strategic step toward consolidating opposition forces and reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the next presidential contest.
