U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Ukraine to give up its aspirations of joining NATO and relinquish hopes of reclaiming annexed Crimea, ahead of high-stakes meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and European leaders in Washington on Monday.
The White House confirmed that Trump will first meet Zelenskiy at 1:15 p.m. EDT (1715 GMT) in the Oval Office before holding broader talks with leaders from Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Finland, the European Union, and NATO in the East Room at 3 p.m. EDT (1900 GMT).
The meetings come just days after Trump welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, where the two leaders discussed proposals for ending the war that has raged since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The conflict has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions, making it Europe’s deadliest war in eight decades.
Trump signaled on Sunday that he expects major concessions from Kyiv. On his Truth Social platform, he wrote: “Zelenskiy can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight. Remember how it started. No getting back Obama given Crimea (12 years ago, without a shot being fired!), and NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE.”
While Trump’s team has emphasized the need for compromise on both sides, his remarks placed the burden on Kyiv to end the war. Ukraine and its allies, however, remain wary that any settlement pushed by Washington could favor Moscow.
Zelenskiy, who arrived in Washington late Sunday, expressed gratitude for the invitation but underscored Kyiv’s position that Russia must end the war it began. “We all equally want to end this war swiftly and reliably,” Zelenskiy said on Telegram. “Russia must end this war — the war it started. And I hope that our shared strength with America and with our European friends will compel Russia to real peace.”
Putin’s proposals, which included Ukraine ceding control of the remaining parts of Donetsk still under Kyiv’s authority, have already been dismissed by Zelenskiy. The Ukrainian president is seeking an immediate ceasefire to pave the way for deeper peace talks. Trump, however, shifted his stance after meeting Putin, leaning toward Moscow’s preference of negotiating a comprehensive settlement while hostilities continue.
As diplomacy unfolded, the war showed no signs of easing. Ukrainian officials said Russian missile and drone strikes overnight targeted Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city near the Russian border, killing seven people, including two children.
