Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan claimed silver in the women’s 100 metres hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Monday, as Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji stormed to a stunning gold medal in national record time.
Kambundji, 23, clocked 12.24 seconds to secure Switzerland’s first-ever world title in the event, eclipsing her previous best in a dramatic finish. Amusan, the 2022 champion and world record holder, followed closely in 12.29s to deliver Nigeria’s 12th medal in the history of the World Championships.
The bronze medal went to American Grace Stark in 12.34s, with compatriot Masai Russell finishing fourth in 12.44s after recording the slowest reaction time of the finalists. Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska equalled her season’s best with 12.49s to place fifth, narrowly edging Bahamian Devynne Charlton who clocked the same time. Jamaica’s 2023 champion Danielle Williams finished seventh in 12.53s, while Nadine Visser of the Netherlands placed eighth in 12.56s.
Amusan, 28, had earlier won her semi-final convincingly in 12.36s, raising hopes of defending her crown. But in the final, despite a strong start, she was unable to hold off Kambundji’s late surge.
The result adds to Amusan’s illustrious record on the global stage, including her historic 2022 triumph in Eugene, where she set the world record of 12.12s
