The Nigeria Police have arraigned Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, his brother Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and 10 other individuals in connection with the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest held in Abuja on Monday.
Their arraignment was confirmed through a court document shared on Tuesday by former National Chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Nigeria (HRCN), Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, via X.
According to the charge sheet, the suspects are facing allegations of inciting public disturbance, breach of public peace, and disobedience to a court order. The police accused them of obstructing vehicular movement, denying other citizens the freedom of movement, and chanting war songs while demanding the release of the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
This development follows earlier remarks by Benjamin Hundeyin, the Force Public Relations Officer, who disclosed during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday that those arrested during the protest would be prosecuted within 24 hours.
Hundeyin confirmed that Ejimakor, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and others were apprehended after allegedly attempting to force their way into restricted areas around the Transcorp Hilton vicinity.
“We arrested Nnamdi Kanu’s brother, his lawyer because they insisted on making way to the restricted areas… They are currently at the state CID, and once we conclude our investigation… they will be facing the court,” Hundeyin stated.
The suspects have now been formally charged and are expected to appear before the court as proceedings continue regarding their involvement in the Abuja protest.
