Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have announced the registration of five new political parties ahead of the 2019 general elections in the country.

INEC’s Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Adedeji Soyebi made the disclosure at the end of the commission’s meeting in Kaduna on Wednesday.

According to Soyebi, the newly-registered political parties are Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance (APDA), the Young Progressive Party (YPP), New Generation Party of Nigeria (NGP), Action Democratic Party (ADP) and All Democratic Peoples Movement (ADPM).

“At present, 95 associations have applied to the commission for registration as political parties. Two of the associations voluntarily withdrew their applications,” Soyebi said.

“The commission today approved the applications of five of the associations which have fulfilled the constitutional requirements for registration,” he added.

He also revealed that no fewer than 760,989 voters have so far been registered in the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration which began on April 27, adding that due to budgetary constraints, the commission could not decentralise the voter registration down to the Registration Area level.

The registration of the five new parties brings to 45, the number of political parties that will be slugging it out for elective offices during the 2019 polls.
